Chapter 721 - 573: Roasted Pumpkin
After they finished picking fruit and taking photos,
it was almost noon, the sun was blazing, and everyone was thinking of going back to the homestay to drink some tea, eat some fruit, and rest a bit before lunch.
But Ning Youguang wasn’t afraid of the sun.
"You all go back first, Wangyue and I will go walk around the backyard." She’d been indoors a lot lately and really needed some sunshine.
Anyway, she had a hat on; the noon sun was just right on her back.
When everyone heard this, they immediately said—
"Okay, okay, Teacher Ning, you two have fun, we’ll head back first."
"Teacher Ning, you can go over there, there are peacocks over there."
"The peacocks are over there?" Ning Youguang followed the direction the girl was pointing.
"Yes, right over there. When I got up this morning, I saw a peacock standing outside my room." It turned out the girl who’d told Ning Youguang there were peacocks in the backyard happened to be staying in a first-floor room.
"Got it, thank you." Ning Youguang smiled and turned to walk toward where the peacocks were.
"See you in a bit." After saying goodbye to everyone, Shi Wangyue followed her.
When the two of them walked to the place the girl had mentioned, they were instantly delighted to find there really were peacocks there.
Two of them.
Both perched on dead trees.
They were covered in beautiful multicolored feathers, proudly lifting their slender heads as they looked around.
Their crests stood tall.
In the sunlight, they looked absolutely stunning.
Ning Youguang went on another little photo spree, and when they headed back to the villa afterward, they didn’t take the original path but looped around the other side of the villa instead.
As they walked, Ning Youguang suddenly saw, at the foot of a wall, several lush pumpkin vines on the ground, with quite a few fully ripe orange pumpkins hanging from them, looking cute and beautiful.
"Oh, pumpkins." Overjoyed, Ning Youguang immediately took the camera off her neck, tossed it to Shi Wangyue, then ran over and squatted beside the pumpkins, touching the smooth pumpkins as if she couldn’t bear to let go.
"They’re so ripe, how come no one’s picked them?"
"Pumpkin is so delicious."
"Even if you don’t eat them, just leaving them here as decoration looks great."
She stroked the pumpkins while muttering to herself.
She had no idea how cute this looked in Shi Wangyue’s eyes.
So cute that someone who usually barely touched a camera couldn’t help turning it on, quietly and intently taking photos of the person chatting away with a bunch of pumpkins on the ground.
When he’d more or less gotten the shots he wanted and saw that Ning Youguang was still looking down at the pumpkins, he said, "I’ll call Assistant Jin and have him ask the homestay owner if we can pick these pumpkins."
"No need."
"?"
"We can pick all of these." Ning Youguang lifted her head, smiling with crescent eyes at Shi Wangyue, her grin bright and carefree. "When we were in the backyard just now, your colleagues already told me. They asked—the fruits and vegetables around the homestay, we can pick whatever we need, it’s included in the room fee."
"Then why are you staring at them for so long?"
Shi Wangyue chuckled.
"I’m just trying to decide which one is better to pick."
Shi Wangyue walked over to the suddenly indecisive Teacher Ning, reached out, and plucked off the biggest pumpkin. "No need to think about it. Anything you want, we’ll just take it."
"But I’m worried we won’t be able to finish them," Ning Youguang said.
"With so many people, how could we not finish a few pumpkins?" In Shi Wangyue’s opinion, Ning Youguang clearly had some misconceptions about how much a big group could eat.
"Oh, right." Ning Youguang finally realized. "We can cook them right here."
With that, she lowered her head and picked a small pumpkin next to her. "I didn’t know we could cook here. I was thinking of picking a few to take home."
"Then let’s pick a few more." Shi Wangyue said generously, "We’ll eat the big ones here and take the small ones home."
So, when the slightly delayed Shi Wangyue and Ning Youguang finally headed back to the homestay after everyone else, each of them was carrying two pumpkins.
Shi Wangyue was holding two big ones.
Ning Youguang had two small ones in her arms.
"President Shi, Teacher Ning?" The people drinking tea in the living room were stunned when they saw the two walk in hugging pumpkins.
Two of them, quick on their feet, immediately came over and reached out to help with the pumpkins.
"Thank you." Shi Wangyue handed one of the smaller pumpkins to his subordinate. "Pack these pumpkins up for me, I want to take them with us when we leave."
"Sure."
The subordinate who took the two pumpkins from Ning Youguang also responded promptly.
Shi Wangyue then turned to Ning Youguang. "Go to your room and get your things ready, I’ll head to the kitchen."
"Okay." Ning Youguang nodded, greeted the people in the living room, and went upstairs to her room.
After she left,
the rest turned to Shi Wangyue. "President Shi, are you planning to send the pumpkins to the kitchen and have Xiao Zhang and the others cook them?"
"No." After answering, Shi Wangyue walked toward the kitchen, leaving everyone in the living room totally confused.
Seeing him circling around the kitchen, everyone thought he was hungry. "President Shi, some of the dishes aren’t ready yet, you’ll have to wait a bit."
Shi Wangyue said coolly, "Carry on, I’m just looking around."
But that wasn’t what his actions said.
After he gave the kitchen a once-over, his gaze immediately fell on the orange-red pumpkin Ning Youguang had picked earlier on one of the slopes, now sitting on the counter.
He walked over, picked up the pumpkin, and carried it over to the sink to wash.
"President Shi?" A subordinate who was washing vegetables at the other tap stared at him in shock as he came over.
"You do your thing." Shi Wangyue’s hands never stopped moving. "I’ll wash and cut this pumpkin and make a baked pumpkin gratin for everyone."
"..." Everyone in the kitchen practically went into slow motion, stopping what they were doing and slowly turning their heads.
Immortals cook too?!
Very soon, they realized the "immortal" in their eyes was serious.
His movements were unhurried yet not slow at all. On the contrary, whether it was washing the pumpkin or peeling it and laying it on the cutting board to slice into evenly thick pieces, his actions were crisp and efficient.
They even wondered if it was just because he was too handsome, but even the simple act of scooping out the seeds with a spoon looked like a painting.
After he finished cutting the pumpkin, he asked, "Do we have garlic, onions, milk, and cheese?"
The few "chefs" beside him nodded like pounding garlic. "Yes, yes, yes."
The young guy who’d been washing vegetables beside him took a few long strides and quickly fetched cheese and milk from the fridge for him, while another youth who was chopping vegetables handed over a few cloves of peeled solo garlic and a bowl of sliced onions.
"Thanks."
After taking everything one by one from their hands, Shi Wangyue walked to a stove and asked the guy standing guard there, "Are you using this burner right now?"
The guy quickly stepped back. "You use it, President Shi, you use it."
Shi Wangyue chose a milky white oval cast-iron pot, set it on the burner, turned on the flame, and poured in oil—smooth and seamless.
Then he tossed in the sliced garlic and onions to sauté until fragrant, added the pumpkin to stir-fry, and when it was done, poured it into a lemon-yellow baking dish.
He turned around again, walked to the wall where a lot of small kitchen tools were hanging, took down a fine grater suitable for spices and another one specifically for grating cheese, and grated the cheese and seasonings delicately over the baking dish.
Once word got out that Shi Wangyue was cooking, countless employees were tempted and wanted to go watch.
Ze Wu was the first to go take a look. Having lived with him for a period of time, he knew that Shi Wangyue could cook, but it was always healthy food—bread, boiled vegetables with chicken breast, or shrimp salad and the like.
At most, he’d add a steak.
It tasted fine, but long-term, Ze Wu really couldn’t get used to eating that way with him. He wasn’t some self-disciplined Puritan.
He couldn’t restrain his desires for long.
When he occasionally needed to adjust his weight he’d eat with him; most of the time he’d go out on his own for a hearty meal or join other people’s dinners.
So he’d actually never seen Shi Wangyue make any really "heavy" dishes, and was curious what he’d make for such a big group today.
Very soon, he saw Shi Wangyue in the kitchen, surrounded by a crowd of onlookers.
At the same time, he also saw Ning Youguang among them, camera in hand, snapping photos.
What a perfect "husband cooks, wife records" scene.
The boss made a delicious baked pumpkin gratin, poured in cream, covered it generously with cheese, and the moment the oven door opened, the whole studio was filled with an intense, mouthwatering aroma.
